Could Apathy be holding you back from Success?

Apathy. That dirty word that nobody wants to talk about.



The dictionary defines apathy as “lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern.” You could also say it means indifference.


Everyone who is trying to achieve something in life knows that apathy is a dream-stealer. To achieve any goal you have to be interested, enthusiastic and concerned about how you will achieve your goal. But if you are in an apathetic frame of mind, then you cannot possibly achieve a goal that requires those elements.



Karmapa who leads the 900-year-old Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism was quoted in an article saying: “A lack of love can cause people to have no help when they need help, no friends when they need a friend,” Karmapa said. “So, in a sense, the most dangerous thing in the world is apathy. We think of weapons, violence, warfare, disease as terrible dangers, and indeed they are, but we can take measures to avoid them. But once our apathy takes hold of us, we can no longer avoid it.”


There are many reasons to enter into an apathetic frame of mind. Let’s look at a few of them:

  • Depression

  • Recent traumatic event

  • Loss of a Loved one

  • Burn-out

  • Drug use

  • Underlying medical condition


If you are normally an enthusiastic person and genuinely interested in achieving success, and you suddenly find yourself feeling a lack of interest, enthusiasm or concern, then you have to find out what is causing it. A visit to your GP is an excellent 1st choice to rule out any medical condition.


The entire world has been thrown into chaos with the Covid-19 pandemic.


Many people have lost their jobs and many companies have been forced to close. Under these circumstances it would be understandable to be feeling apathy. However, if you want to achieve long-term success, you do not want to unpack and live at this place. Give yourself a few weeks to process your experience and to feel your emotions. Confide in a loved one about how you are feeling and get some emotional support.


Once you feel you have achieved this integration it’s time to jump back on your horse again and go off to conquer the world again.


Here are a few things you can try that might help you move forward again:

  • Daily meditation

  • Watching motivation videos

  • Daily exercise

  • Getting enough daily sunshine

  • Being in regular contact with your loved ones

  • Regularly socialising with your friends

  • Adopting a healthier diet

  • Studying something important that will improve your career prospects

  • Learning a new skill

To a large degree we can control our emotions by controlling our thought processes. If you are constantly focused on negative things, you will eventually start to experience mainly negative emotions. Therefore it is very important that you cast your mind on positive things in order to experience more positive emotions.
